Chapter 15
January 1813
One morning, while they were eating breakfast, Darcy asked Elizabeth to meet him in his study when they finished their meal. Since Georgiana was also at the table, Elizabeth consented, not wanting to say anything in front of her sister that would upset her. When Elizabeth entered his study, Darcy was seated behind his desk. He did rise when she walked in and showed her to a chair on the other side of his desk. Darcy spoke first. “Elizabeth, we cannot go on like this. You are treating me like a complete stranger. Can we not return to the way things were when we were first married? If I have done something to offend you, I wish you would tell me.”
Elizabeth did not know how to respond. Her husband was having an affair and yet he did not understand how he might have offended her. She would not give him the satisfaction of accusing him of loving Lady Alice. If he did not know how his indiscretion had devastated her then she would not be the one to point it out to him. She finally said, “Mr. Darcy, I feel that I was deceived by your behavior in Hertfordshire last October. The person who proposed to me again on Oakham Mount was not the real Fitzwilliam Darcy. The real Fitzwilliam Darcy is a cruel, unfeeling and disloyal person. A person I never would have married if I had known the real you.” Elizabeth’s bitter words burned in her throat but she had finally told her husband the truth. At least, part of the truth.
“This, this is how you really feel about me? Very well, madam, I shall not impose on you any longer.” Darcy stormed out of his study and slammed the door. Elizabeth immediately felt regret for her harsh words. ‘Why did our discussion end this way? Do married couples ever talk to each other honestly? Why had Darcy not even taken the time to ask me how and why my heart became disengaged from his so quickly? Am I now so prejudiced against my husband that if he persisted in knowing what was wrong, would I have told him what was really troubling me? Would I have told him how my insecurities and self-doubts had only increased since our wedding day? Would I have told him that I saw him speaking intimately with Lady Alice at Matlock House? Would I have told him that I saw his carriage outside the Thornton townhouse when he told me he was meeting with his solicitor?’
In her mind, Elizabeth felt sure that Darcy thought that she was not good enough for him. She had listened to her mother’s criticisms for her entire life. Did Darcy ever really love her? If he did love her, how could he explain his behavior with Lady Alice Thornton? Did he love Lady Alice? Everything she saw and heard led her to believe that Lady Alice was Darcy’s mistress. When he told her he was
